This morning, at the edge of suburban Ottawa, a bus ran a level crossing and T boned a train. The ensuing carnage was not pretty, 6 dead including the driver, 30 injured, 10 critically.
Passengers say people yelled at the driver to stop, before the bus ran the level crossing, at which the barriers (according to witnesses) were down.
RIP

I was just reading about this. Witnesses say the driver ran the barrier. I suppose the driver is dead, so we might never know why he did it. Asleep? Having a seizure? Suicidal? We'll probably never know. Very sad.

We might know if the bus was equipped with cameras as part of the EDR (event data recorder) system. A lot of city buses in the US (not sure about motorcoaches like megabus and Greyhound) have cameras recording the driver's view out the windshield, the driver, the front door, and the passenger area. These camera views have been used to find out if a driver was texting, asleep, or having a medical emergency at the time of a crash.
Here's an example of all the camera views on a METRO bus in Houston, TX:

That's true. Let's hope so.

The Transport Safety Board is investigating. We will (hopefully) eventually find out.
